IR mounting hardware comes in many different options, just as the IR Windows optics we spoke about previously do. They all have the same functionality, and this is obviously to attach the IR Windows themselves to the host panel. They all work in similar ways, it’s simply a case of choosing which one is best for your business. You may also have to take into consideration the amount of time a particular method requires to install.
Which IR Windows mounting hardware should you choose?
Infrared window mounts come in two very distinct types; those which are accessible from inside of the panel+ itself, and those which are not. Typically, the former option usually requires a clearance hole and the latter has its own.
First of all, we must advise that when installing an IR Window, you must ensure that the panel cover is always removed and put in a place where metal shavings cannot enter the panel during installation. Doing this will prevent arc-flash and any severe injuries from occurring. There are manufacturers in the industry that claim that the IR Window can be installed without removing the panel, however we would urge you to take care by not doing this.
A traditional method of securing your IR Window onto a panel is to use a series of bolts, or a nut, as this is hugely effective. It is also possible to fix the infrared window onto the panel by utilising a single large nut which threads onto the body of the window and protrudes through the panel. This seems to be the most simple of the two options here.
Concerns facing the internally fixed IR Window
There are two main concerns when it comes to fixing IR Windows internally. These include the following:
- Panels vibrating – These fixings are always metallic and if they fell into a panel, it would cause a big disruption.
- Panel thickness – Mounting the window internally limits the thickness of the panel. Although switchgear panels are thin, transformer and motor box installations can be around 6mm which would not accommodate the bolt.
Fixing your mounting hardware from the front however resolves these issues as there is no depth restriction whatsoever. The only factor that has to be considered is that the thickness of the panel is sufficient for the fixings to thread into. The added bonus is that there are no internal bolts, nuts or washers to work loose over time, preventing serious problems in the long run.
Front fixings > Internal fixings (in our opinion)
Our experience of mounting hardware at CorDEX is that front fixings are more reliable than internal ones. However, to speed up the installation process, try drilling the fixing hole and run a tap through it. This will prevent screw heads from breaking or a screw shaft being embedded into the panel or falling into the IR Window itself, as they are certainly not easily released.
